A family holiday isn’t complete without a trip to the beach, but not all beaches are created equal if you’ve got tots in tow. There’s so much to think about: Is the water safe? Is there a flat surface to push that pesky stroller along? Are there facilities to keep the little ones entertained?

Playa de Alcudia, the #10 beach in Spain, is also a Blue Flag Beach, a mark of the beach’s cleanliness. All the necessary facilities needed for a young family can be found here: showers, toilets and changing stations. If the kids get bored of making sandcastles and splashing around in the generally calm water, there’s a special kids play area to keep them entertained.
A visit to Elafonisi Beach, the #22 beach in the world, is an adventure that the littles will love. For one, the sand has a pinkish hue to it—and who doesn’t love a pink sandcastles? The beach is also a lagoon, which means it’s protected from the open sea by rocks and islets that surround the bay. It also means it’s possible to wade across the water to an island—adventure, indeed!
Bondi, #8 best-rated beach in the South Pacific, is a surf beach, so it can be a bit wild at times, but there’s safe zone marked with two flags. And, for the littlest of tots there is a children’s pool ideal for splashing around. Other family-friendly amenities include a path for easy access with a stroller, shaded picnic benches and dedicated BBQ areas, and a covered playground for extra shade from the Aussie sun. Siesta Beach, the #6 in the US, is a family oasis with calm, turquoise waters, powder-fine sand, and kid-friendly amenities including a playground, toilets, and lifeguard supervision. As a family day at the beach often means packing everything but the kitchen sink to ensure all bases are covered, the free parking lot that serves nearly 1,000 cars is an added bonus.
A sandy beach,Europe’s #15 beach is essentially a long sand bar separating the sea from the Dalyan River, which means it has warm, calm water, perfect for swimming. It’s also ideal for nature-loving families, since it’s a breeding ground for loggerhead turtles (although visitors to the beach must respect the creatures and stay behind the wooden stakes marking their protected nests).
Filey is the #6 in the UK and the perfect beach for kids to explore. There is a sculpture trail that surrounds the bay and the ancient remains of a Roman signal station can be found on the cliffs just above. In addition, Filey is well-known for its rock pools which can provide hours of fun for little ones looking at the marine life that inhabits them. Along the promenade, families will find cafes, changing facilities, a children’s playground, and even a crazy golf course.
